Job Title: Reading Specialist

Job Description

Position Summary:

This position is for a certified Reading Specialist, preferably Wilson Trained or Certified, or willing to become trained, who will:

    Provide direct and differentiated instruction to students

    Support and make recommendations for teachers regarding students with reading deficits

    Implement program goals

    Provide push-in / pull-out reading and writing instruction to students

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Align instruction with the mission of Centreville Layton School

    Use evidence-based practices that promote student success across curriculum

    Provide pull-out instruction to individual or small groups of students as identified by school administrators and the educational team

    Use multi-sensory and diagnostic instructional techniques in individual and small group sessions

    Teach students reading strategies that will support success in the content area subjects

    Support classroom teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs within the classroom by:

          o Helping to adjust, modify and enrich the curriculum

          o Providing teacher training

    Use formative and summative assessments and document student progress and achievement

    Plan and participate in two yearly reading events

    Communicate effectively with school administrators, classroom teachers, families and students through face-to-face dialogue, written messages, and written reports to track and communicate progress

    Perform other duties as assigned

Immediate Supervisors: Lower, Middle, and Upper School Heads

Education / Experience / Skills Requirements:

    Certified Reading Specialist

    Wilson Reading System training or certificate preferred, or willing to obtain training

    Experience as a Reading Specialist preferred Possess knowledge of evidence-based practices that promote students’ success across curriculum

    Demonstrated an in-depth understanding of language structure and mastery of multi-sensory and diagnostic instructional techniques

    Demonstrate knowledge of Executive Functioning

    Demonstrate knowledge of reading strategies that will support students in the content area subjects

    Demonstrated understanding, appreciation and sympathy for students who learn differently

    Demonstrate ability to work effectively as part of a team

    Must possess excellent collaboration, and written and verbal communication skills

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must have the ability to understand and present materials and communicate with constituents and co-workers in a harmonious manner.
