Mathematics is a challenging area of study for many children with learning differences. It requires the memorization of facts and formulas, the use of data in complex ways, and an ability to think abstractly. The Lower School brings a hands-on approach to the teaching of mathematics, introducing students to mathematical concepts through direct instruction and real life examples. The development of mental math skills is stressed, with expectations being set according to each student’s strengths and areas of needs.
In keeping with our school’s mission to identify the needs of the individual student and provide instruction that focuses on problem solving and critical thinking, a variety of approaches are used for mathematical instruction at the Lower School No one program is used exclusively. Teachers draw from Saxon Math and JUMP Math (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies; a program designed for students with math anxiety) for their core lessons. Hands-on activities, the use of manipulatives, on-line programs and apps, and a variety of worksheets and activities designed to meet individual needs are all part of math class. Daily lessons, through the use of an interactive Math Meeting, and homework, focus on reviewing previously learned concepts and skills while adding new ones.
