The Upper School mathematics program at Centreville Layton School combines individualization with a systematic approach. The program follows the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Standards. New material is presented in increments. Each increment builds on the foundation of earlier increments, leading students to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. The instruction of related increments is carefully distributed throughout the grade level, ensuring that students have the opportunity to master each increment before being introduced to the next related one.
The overall goals include: developing confidence by providing an experience of success in doing math, introducing and developing math study skills, and becoming better prepared for future math courses in a secondary or college setting.
